Mission Malawi 4 - Departing May 2010

The team from Mission Malawi 4.

Mission Malawi 4Alex Taylor
I was a team member of Mission Malawi II in 2006, and have signed up to go back again in May 2010.

Malawi is known as the 'Warm Heart of Africa. It is anincredible country, with beautiful people, many of whom are living in incredibly difficult circumstances. Not least the fact that 1 in 7 people in Malawi is living with HIV/AIDS and someone dies every 9 minutes from AIDS related illness.

I will be going out to take part in a 15 day challenge we will be cycling over 500km (300 miles) through Malawi and Mozambique . We will visit several projects that we have helped to fund. Please give what you can, and we'll do our best to raise even more money for what is a really important issue.

Your donations mean a lot to me and will be going to help the people of Malawi build a better future. Sponsor me

I’ve now lived in London for almost 10 years, I've travelled a lot but never been to Africa.  I was a professional performer for 16 years but I now work as an events manager for an internet company.

After listening to one of my colleagues talk about the mission of the charity, the challenge of the ride and also the camaraderie of all the participants, I was hooked as it’s a great cause.  I decided to do my bit and not only raise funds, but also help to raise awareness amongst all my friends.

I have been "heavily" soliciting my friends and there are two other colleagues taking part, we’ve also decided to raise funds and make a donation through the company as well. We’re doing collections and promoting at events in London and abroad. Our company's website also  reaches hundreds of thousands of people and we hope to get their support too!

This year I decided it was time I started to do whatever I could to help those less fortunate than myself. I work at The Lowry in Salford Quays which is in itself a charitable organisation. I joined the Mission Malawi 3 team having spoken to Dave Armstrong about his experiences on the last trip. I am never without my bike so this sounded perfect for me! The dedication of the team and the amount of money that had been raised to fund HIV/AIDS projects working in Malawi is amazing. I feel very proud to say that I am now a part of the team. Please do whatever you can to support us. Sponsor me

Destination - Malawi/Mozambique Africa... Date - 09/05/2010... Distance - 500 Km's (A flamin long way!)... Means - By Bike!... Probable Outcome - A Very sore Bum!!!
That is a brief outline of what I am planning to do... A work collegue (Emmsy) suggested taking some time out from the normal humdrum of everyday life and doing something different... So after a little searching and thinking about what would be really worth while and possibly life changing we fell upon Action Aids charity work in Africa... Schools for Children, local services for villages, and help for people living with Aids and HIV... What with my enthusiasm for cycling this seemed a good mix!!
I am searching to raise £3200 for this trip, and ask for any help that is at all possbile from you... 1 man cannot change the world but 1 man with a team behind him can maybe make a dent... Speaking to People that have been to Malawi have all said how wonderful the people are and deserve any help that is possbile... I will be visiting many sites that action aid have set up along my trip and will be taking thousands of photos to show everyone where there help is going.
So please give what you can and be part of my team :o)

Hi! I’m Drew. I’m 24 years old and from Oldham, Manchester. Charity and fundraising events have always played a large part in my life as I was growing up. Challenges are not something new to me and I try to involve as many people as I can in fundraising for good and worthwhile causes however more can always be done!
I am looking forward to my next epic adventure and can’t wait to be part of the Mission Malawi 4 Team. The charity ActionAid makes a big difference to people affected by HIV/AIDS and without your help we would not be able to raise awareness in such a positive way. Right now, we can only make the lives of these unfortunate people more tolerable however with continued support and committed people we might one day be able to find a cure for HIV/AIDS. Nothing is impossible so please give generously and remember that your donations go right to the people who need them most!

Those of you that know me will know that I enjoy the wind in my beard as I'm speeding through the congestion zone on my bike (paying due attention to traffic signals). As soon as I heard that some friends were taking part in a 500km ride through Malawi and Mozambique in support of ActionAid I knew it would be the most exciting and challenging way to raise much needed funds for the projects that ActionAid is running.
I think you should set yourself a challenge every year, and this year I'll be turning 34 during the course of the 500km trip. Even if I do enough training and I'm fit enough to cover the distance, I'm sure the temperature and blazing sun will pose an even greater challenge to my fair ginger skin!

I have to raise a huge amount of money and really appreciate all the support you can offer

Hi everyone I've decided to do a 500km bike ride in Malawi next May to raise much needed money for the charity ActionAid. Misssion Malawi will be a tough yet rewarding cycle through Malawi and Mozambique where I will see first hand the projects ActionAid has set up such as the Chisomo Children's club - an orphanage for children orphaned by HIV/AIDS. This is a great opportunity for me to help those less fortunate than myself and will be an amazing life experience. I need to raise £3200 for Actionaid so I need all the support I can get.

Mission Malawi 4Les Pratt
My name's Les Pratt and I'm a producer for BBC Radio 3, based in Manchester. I set up Mission Malawi back in 2003, and I can hardly believe we're preparing for our 3rd expedition already! More than 40 people have taken part in the 2 expeditions so far, and we've raised a staggering £175,000 along the way - money which is being well-spent in ActionAid's HIV projects, specifically in Malawi, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. In May 2008, we'll be cycling over 400km and walking through one of Malawi's national parks, visiting orphanages and care centres en route. Please dig deep and donate anything you can afford. This money will help the many hundreds of thousands of people in Africa who are struggling to cope with the day to day effects of HIV/AIDS. Thank you so much.

I have a strong affinity for all things Malawi, having spent my formative years growing up there as a child; it was truly a wonderful and exotic place to be at that age, I volunteer for another project in Malawi called Temwa as well.

I am really looking forward to MM4, it will be great to meet a group of people with some common values AND a sense of adventure and share such an exciting experience ... I do have some slight trepidation, given that I didn’t even have a bike when I signed up; now I have one and have started training (of a sort), for the first time I now truly understand the enormity of what I will be putting my body (and backside) through... still no pain no gain!

Based in Islington, North London, I run an IT company close to Old Street which develops and runs an online dating site.  I’ve lived in London since 1997.  I’m originally from the North West.

I am very much looking forward to participating in Mission Malawi in 2009. A colleague of mine was involved in Mission Malawi 2 in 2006 and he was a huge influence on my decision to take part in Mission Malawi IV. This is my first opportunity of being able to be involved in such a challenge, and I am extremely excited at the prospects of raising money for such a worthwhile cause.

Hi I've been involved with Mission Malawi since 2002 and have worked with Les to help take it from the idea his mind to the great success it is today.  Due to health reasons, I was unable to participate in the first couple of challenges however, I did go on the recce with Les in 2007 for MM3.  That more than wetted my appetite and enthusiasm to work hard to support the incredible work Action Aid does out there.

This is a very big challenge for me. It's a gruelling cycle ride along the shores of lake Malawi and Mozambique - a of a feet for someone who hasn't been on a bike since he left school - seriously!

Friends who have been on previous Mission Malawi's have returned with inspiring stories of what a beautiful Country Malawi how friendly its people are. They come home with an amazing sense of achievement and well-being. It's a humbling experience and something they will never forget.

The money raised will help some of the many millions of people in Africa who are strugling to cope with the day to day effects of HIV / AIDS. So please sponsor me as much as you possibly can!

I know how much you would like to be there with us, but you can't, well not this time!
In the certain knowledge that the intrepid cyclists, including myself, will be suffering both physically and mentally during May 2010, that alone must be worth a few quid. Think of it as a contribution to my own personal discomfort. The money will be going to help people help themselves in communities that do not have any of the facilities which we all take for granted. So go on dig deep in those pockets and be proud to have made a difference.

Hi, I'm Tim and I'm currently on a gap year between my A-levels and university in Manchester next year and conveniently am working for Evans cycles in Canary Wharf. I wanted to do something productive and help those less fortunate than ourselves in my gap year instead of just lounging on the sofa playing Xbox. Luckily I discovered Mission Malawi 4 giving me a chance to combine cycling and raising money for a good cause a perfect combination. I caught the cycling bug doing the London to Brighton in the summer which was quickly followed by London to Paris a couple of weeks after, I'm now planning MM and hopefully the Lands End to John O'Groats trip.

Mission Malawi is a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness and indeed money to help those suffering from poverty and AIDS/HIV in Malawi. Even the smallest of donations can be stretched a long way bigger ones can be used to reach even more people but any donation means a lot and is greaty appreciated. Many thanks

Hi I'm Tim, I'm 25, work in the environmental sector and live in Purley, South London. I have travelled around East Africa in 2007 after helping with a community development project in Tanzania and have been itching to get back since. My work and study in the environmental sector has tought me that cycling is the best way to travel in every way possible and from then have developed a keen interest. One day I typed in 'Cycling in Malawi' into Google and Mission Malawi came up, and now I am here writing this biography!.
