Mzuzu Branch of NAPHAM

(NAPHAM = National Association of People Living with HIV/Aids in Malawi)

MuzzuThis project was one of the first visited by Mission Malawi and was funded after the first trip for a year, the money was used for:

  • Extension of NAPHAM resource centre
  • Integration of child care sessions for children infected and affected by HIV/AIDS Procurement  supplies for resource centre 
  • Youth outreach in schools
  • Monitoring and evaluation

NAPHAM main goal was to support youth friendly services and provide hope to vulnerable children infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.

Construction of resource centre
A resource center at Masasa was extended using funds from Mission Malawi project. In addition to this NAPHAM Mzuzu bought furniture and television set which have added value to the dissemination of HIV/AIDS messages to young people.

MuzzuChild care sessions
Child care sessions were introduced for children whose parents died of HIV/AIDS.  During the sessions, children learned about basic HIV/AIDS information and other related issues. Children also received psychosocial counseling.

During the same time, a programme called children’s moment was introduced. In this programme children aged between 5 and 10 years are gathered on a weekly basis. The children are provided with a nutritious meal on every visit.

Results:
- 30 children attending NAPHAM child  care sessions once per week
- 2 NAPHAM volunteers contracted for the programme
- 2 volunteers trained in child care and youth friendly services
- 20 youth trained in advocacy and social mobilization

Specifically the project will target children below the age of eight (8) through early childhood development activities. A Community Based Child care centre focusing on stimulating early childhood learning while enhancing physical and cognitive development will be established.
